I can't say I didn't see it coming. After 9 irreverent, take no-prisoners seasons, Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef, finally thinks "South Park" has crossed the line and he cannot, in good faith, take part in the series anymore.
In a statement issued yesterday, (taken from E! Online) Mr. Hayes said: "Religious beliefs are sacred to people and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices." He asked to be released from his contract due to the show's "inappropriate ridicule of religious communities."
Now, now, I realize it might have taken Mr. Hayes some time to realize that South Park's brand of humor was not exactly of the uplifting and politically correct variety. I mean, it was at least several minutes into the original Christmas Card episode before the writers pitted Santa Claus against Jesus Christ in a bloody deathmatch. You can't blame Mr. Hayes for not seeing "inappropriate ridicule of religious communities" in that very first outing for the South Park boys. It could have taken Mr. Hayes 9 entire seasons to figure this out. 9 entire seasons that included the following episodes:
Episode 40, Season 3: "Jewbilee." I think the name says it all.
Episode 47, Season 3: "Are You There God? It's Me, Jesus." It involves Cartman bleeding out of his ass. Enough said.
Episode 57, Season 4: "Do The Handicapped Go To Hell?" Makes fun of organized religion in general, as well as the evangelicals.
Episode 68, Season 5: "The Super Best Friends." Who isn't made fun of in this episode? But, specifically, it features, Jesus, Buddha, Moses, Krishna, Mohammed, Joseph Smith, and Lao Tzu.
Episode 87, Season 6: "Red-Hot Catholic Love." This one deals with Catholic priests, molestation, and The Great Queen Spider (who is a higher power than the Pope). Perhaps a little sacrilegious.
Episode 108, Season 7: "All About The Mormons?" Bet you can figure out what this is about, right?
Episode 114, Season 8: "The Passion Of The Jew." Kyle, the Jewish kid, watches Mel Gibson's religious movie and decides the Jews need to apologize for "killing" Jesus. Cartman mobilizes those who like the movie and starts a quasi-Nazi army of believers intent on a "final solution." Nope, nothing sacrilegious about that.
And, of course, the constant insulting of the Jews by character Eric Cartman. And the fact that Jesus and Satan are regular characters on the show.
It was not until after SEASON 9 (yes, Season-fricking-9!!!) aired that Mr. Hayes indicated that he had a problem with the show and it's commentary. You may be asking: "What could have happened to make him come to this realization after years of the show ripping on Christians, Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Hindus, and Native Americans?" Well, during Season 9, there was this tiny little episode called "Trapped In The Closet" involving carciatures of Tom Cruise, John Travolta, and the entire Scientologist cult. Did I mention that Mr. Hayes is a devout Scientologist?
Suddenly, it all makes sense! Making fun of other people's religion and beliefs (and getting a nice fat paycheck in the process) is okay, but when someone makes fun of YOUR religion and its beliefs, it's "intolerance and bigotry."
You know, something sounds likes intolerance, and it isn't coming from the South Park side.
At least Trey Parker and Matt Stone have the good sense to not cover for Mr. Hayes or try and pussy-foot around the issue. From the E! Online story: " 'He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin,' Stone told the Associated Press."
Amen, Matt. Amen.
If Mr. Hayes really thinks tht he is fooling anybody with his talk of being a "civil rights activist" and "intolerance and bigotry," clearly that Scientologist stuff is good shit. Because Hayes' previous actions, when compared with his current statements, do not come out clean, not even in the brainwash.
