Let me preface this blog entry by saying this really pisses me off.
The American Medical Association (AMA) recently recommended a resolution in which they want states to pass legislation that discourages homebirth and certified professional midwives. In essence, they are trying to restrict the choice – nay, the right – of every woman to choose the type of birth that they want. This is wrong on so many levels. Hiding behind concerns for the safety of women and their babies, the AMA is transparently trying to decrease the competition that doctors – namely obstetricians – may have to deal with when it comes to labor and delivery.
What makes me say that? Why am I not taking the AMA at its word that this isn’t about money or greed or anything other than babies and mommies? Dissecting the resolution itself gives a clue.
Let’s start at the beginning.

Last night, I went with a couple of friends to see the Al Gore/Global Warming documentary "An Inconvenient Truth." It was actually a very good movie - very affecting and thought provoking. Leaving the theater, our group was discussing our own impact on the environment and energy usage. And that when it hit me, my own uncomfortable truth: the reason I have a nice roof over my head and a comfortable lifestyle is because of the energy companies that are helping to ruin our world.
My husband works for one of the largest manufacturers and maintainers of power generation equipment in the world. His job involves the maintenance of the majority of power generation equipment (think power plants) in the state of Virginia. Quite possibly, he may, one day soon, be in charge of the building a slew of new coal burning power plants in Virginia. The more energy that Virginians use (and waste), the more work my husband has. In essence, the consumption of fossil fuels and consequent pollution of our Earth puts food on my table. That's an uncomfortable truth.
