Well, it seems that my beloved Texas A&M Aggies have decided to enter the pre-Super Bowl XL fray by taking on the Seattle Seahawks over Seattle's use of the trademarked "12th Man" phrase. A lot of mean words have been flying as result. In an effort to help calm tempers, I have decided to attempt to determine who should get the "12th Man" term using a variety of decision points.
By the way, if you you even partially believe that Seattle has a chance of winning my hypothetical showdown, you'd best stop reading about now.
Football Team
Aggies: Went 5-6 for the 2005 vs. Seahawks: Going to the Super Bowl
Advantage: Seahawks. (Unfortunately. Come one Coach Fran, give us a winning season already!)
Community Atmosphere
Aggies: College Station is known for cowboys, beer, country music, and Copenhagen chew, as well as the Dixie Chicken. vs. Seahawks: Seattle is known for sensitive poets, coffee, grunge, and Microsoft.
Advantage: Aggies by a nose
Team Mascot
Aggies: Female American collie named Reveille. Goes to class with members of the E-2 Corps of Cadets unit. Has the Corps of Cadet Rank of general. vs. Seahawks: Bird named Blitz T. Seahawk. Supposedly went to Wing State University. No known military background.
Advantage: Aggies. (Reveille would eat that Seahawk for lunch. Plus I really like dogs.)
Fan Traditions
Aggies: Aggie fans stand during the entire football game (except, possibly, half-time). They wave 12th man towels to distract the opposing team. When the Aggies on the field score, the Aggies in the stand score (read: kiss their dates). vs. Seahawks: Fans paint themselves in team colors.
Advantage: Aggies (Scoring in the stands seems like more fun than painting yourself blue and freezing until you actually turn blue.)
Claim to the 12th Man
Aggies: Dates back to 1922 when student E. King Gill came down from the stands and suited up to play in case the injured Aggie team needed him. Now represents the willingness of every Aggie to, basically, take one for the team. vs. Seahawks: Dates back to the 1980s. Represents the fans for scream and shout for the players.
Advantage: Aggies (*sniff* Because the E. King Gill story always brings a tear to my eye *sniff*)
Use of the 12th Man
Aggies: During Jackie Sherrill's time, the kickoff unit was composed entirely of walk-ons in order to represent the 12th man. This tradition was restarted recently by Coach Franchione. Prior to that, the Number 12 was always worn by a walk-on. Most, if not all, Aggie football jerseys sold have the number 12 on them. vs. Seahawks: Retired the number 12. Number 12 flag is flown from the space needle.
Advantage: Aggies (not even a real contest there)
So, by my completely-unbiased-and-oh-so-unsubjective count, the Aggies win 5 to 1. Now, the Aggies and the Seahawks can put this whole messy business behind them.
Of course, I'm still going to cheer for the Steelers this weekend...
